Year 6 Residential to Woodlands Camp

19 Jun

Our year six students went to Woodlands Camp last week on a residential trip. They arrived at the activity centre on Monday, and returned on Friday.

The majority of the year 6 pupils went on the trip, and those who couldn’t, or didn’t want to go on the residential had the opportunity to go on the day trip on the Wednesday.

Activities that the children got to enjoy were archery, kayaking, rock climbing and they also had the opportunity to fly down the zip line. The students that were on the residential enjoyed these activities as well as many more, including night-time hide and seek in the woods and sports hall games when the weather wasn’t quite cooperating.

Over the course of the week many different staff members from Canterbury Cross went over to the Streetly ad venture centre to enjoy an evening or two with the students and, to the pupils amazement, the adults enjoyed playing hide and seek more than they did!

The year six children that went on the day trip also got to enjoy some activities, and to their enjoyment, they had the chance to get really muddy doing the assault course. All kids, and some adults (I’m including myself in that) love the chance to take on the challenge, especially when it means that they get dirty in the process. When the children arrived back from the day trip, they all looked tired out, and I bet that they all went home, had a nice hot shower and collapsed in a heap on their bed. But, on their arrival back to school, they all looked happy, and some gutted that they didn’t go on the trip for the week.

On the Wednesday evening, I had my opportunity to go to Woodlands camp, and I have to say that I really did have a good time. We were treated to lovely food that was cooked in school by a couple of members of staff, and after that I had the chance to judge a Canterbury Woodlands Talent Show, which was interesting, to say the least.

After the talent show I had my first opportunity to play hide and seek in the woods, something I haven’t done for many, many years, and I was excited like a child on Christmas Eve! After an hour or so of playing, the rain wasn’t going away, so we all returned to the dormitories where we enjoyed a cup of hot chocolate and biscuits before all the children went to brush their teeth, and clean-up for bed. Some of the students were fighting their tiredness, but after 10 minutes or so of light out, they were all fast asleep, ready for their penultimate day at Woodlands Camp.

The Thursday of Woodlands is always a special one. It is the BBQ evening, where the parents of the students on the trip can come and visit, share dinner and chat to their child about their week at woodlands, and also a chance to see their child in a different environment, which is a brilliant opportunity for parents to have. It is also a great chance for Mr Din, our Head Teacher to go out to the camp, and chat to the parents and children about the week their experiences over the week.

When all of the children returned to school on the Friday afternoon, they were all happy with their experiences, and I’m pretty certain they were all very pleased to be home on Friday, and I guess they had a long rest, and plenty of sleep over the weekend.

I would like to say a very big well done to all of the children that went on the trip, they were all excellently behaved, and generally seemed to really enjoy themselves, taking part in all activities and making the most of their opportunities.

Also thank you to all the staff that organised stayed over or went for the day to Woodlands, it is a very tiring, but fulfilling opportunity and the week wouldn’t have been a success without all the staff.

And finally, a HUGE thanks to all the staff and parents who cooked for the trip, the food was lovely and you’re welcome to cook me another meal anytime.

Olympic Torch Mania

23 May

For those that don’t know that the Olympics will be here in just under 7 weeks. WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN?

Well, now it’s becoming more and more real, as the Olympic Torch has started parading around the United Kingdom.

The torch, which landed in Britain on Friday 18th May, has now made it from Lands’ End to Bristol since the relay began.

Influential sportsmen and women have teamed up with some lucky Torchbearers to take the torch to 8,000 miles, with 8,000 runners in just 70 days leading up to the Opening Ceremony of the London 2012 Olympics.

So far a number of current and former British Athletes have helped transfer the torch from once city to another.

Three-times Olympic gold medallist Ben Ainslie is the first Torchbearer to carry the Olympic Flame in the UK, other Torchbearers include 2004 Olympic gold medallist Jason Gardner who carried the torch through Bath, Amy Williams, who was the first Brit to win an individual gold medal in 30 years in 2010 at the Winter Olympics carried the torch through Yeovil and Jonathan Edwards the former Olympic, European and World triple jump champion, who has held the world record in the event for 17 years carried the torch on day 3 through Illfracombe, which is near his childhood home.

It isn’t just former athletes who have been carrying the torch, there have been a number of sports stars and celebrities who have been invited to be Torchbearers. Somerset County Cricket Club captain and former England opening batsmen Marcus Treschothick carried the torch through Taunton, as well as Black Eyed Peas and The Voice star Will.I.Am, who ran the mile through Taunton tweeting all the way.

Why am I telling you this? Well because you can have your own chance to see this prestigious event as the torch will arrive in Birmingham on Saturday 30th June, before leaving a day later.

It will be taken all around the West Midlands on the 30th, as the torch arrives from Derby through Lichfield and Tamworth onto Walsall and Wolverhampton where eventually it will end up viewing the Edgbaston Cricket Ground before arriving to celebrations in Cannon Hill Park.

The Wanted, Loick Essien and Morning Parade are three of the acts that have been signed up to be at Cannon Hill Park on the day to hold a huge music festival that will be sponsored by Coca Cola.

Cllr Martin Mullaney, Cabinet Member for Birmingham City Council, Sport and Culture said: “This is another great opportunity for people in Birmingham and the West Midlands to get involved in the Olympic story which will be remembered for generations to come and leave a lasting legacy.”

The links below show you who the Torchbearers are for when the torch arrives in your local area, so please, get on the streets and celebrate with the rest of the country.

Movies for the School Holidays

21 May

With the final half term holidays before the run in to the summer, we look at what movies will be out at the cinema for when you have the Whitsun Holidays.

This year Whitsun Holidays split up the spring and summer term, and give the children the chance to have a week off before the final run in of the school year.

We are hoping that the weather will be nice and bright for everybody so that the children can enjoy that and do lots of outdoor activities that will keep them busy, at minimal cost. But this blog will be a contingency plan for being disappointed, for a change, by the un-predictable British ‘summer time’.

Below are a few movies that will be available to watch at the cinema over the coming weeks;

Beauty and the Beast in 3D. – The old classic is back 21 years after Disney first released it, and this time it is taking us even further, as you can view the film in 3D. Disney also released The Lion King earlier in the year, and with that being a huge hit, thy have now decided to release another classic movie.

‘Belle is a girl who is dissatisfied with life in a small provincial French town, constantly trying to fend off the misplaced “affections” of conceited Gaston. The Beast is a prince who was placed under a spell because he could not love. A wrong turn taken by Maurice, Belle’s father, causes the two to meet.’ (IMDb Website)

Official Movie Trailer – http://youtu.be/EkyAHwRY3JM

Release Date: Friday 4th May                                       Certificate: U

Men in Black III (Also in 3D) – This is the 3rd film of the Men in Black series, starring Fresh Prince of Bel Air star Will Smith and Hollywood veteran Tommy Lee Jones. The two men are back to save planet Earth from an Alien takeover.

‘An alien criminal kills the young Agent K (Tommy Lee Jones) in 1969, altering the timeline, changing the Agency and placing the Earth in danger. Veteran Agent J (Will Smith) must travel back in time to 1969 to before the murder and work with the young Agent K (Josh Brolin) to save him, the Agency, the Earth and humanity itself.’ (IMDb Website)

Official Movie Trailer – http://www.mib3-movie.co.uk/

Release Date: Friday 25th May                                    Certificate: PG

Top Cat (Also in 3D) – The movie that I am looking forward to the most. TC is bound to be up to no good, and with a new police officer to outwit it will be an incredibly funny movie.

Top Cat and the gang face a new police chief, who is not at all happy with officer Dibble’s performance in trying to prevent Top Cat’s scams. Strickland, the new police chief, will test Top Cat and his gang while proving to be the greatest foe Top Cat has ever encountered.’ (IMDb Website)

Here are the theme tune lyrics to Top Cat, so you can impress your friends by knowing the theme song:

Top Cat!
The most effectual Top Cat!
Who’s intellectual close friends get to call him T.C.
Providing it’s with dignity.

Top Cat!
The indisputable leader of the gang.
He’s the boss, he’s a pip, he’s the championship.
He’s the most tip top,
Top Cat.

Yes he’s a chief, he’s a king,
But above everything,
He’s the most tip top,
Top Cat.

Top Cat!

Release Date: Friday 1st June                                                      Certificate: U

These are just some of the movies that will be out in the cinema when the half term holidays begin, and if the weather is bad, which in this country it probably will be, or even as a treat for your children after the SATs exams, or good behaviour in school and at home, these movies will guarantee laughter and amusement.

If you do choose to go and see these films over the holidays, then please find us on Twitter @CanterburyCross and let us know what you thought. You can also comment below and let other people see what you thought of the movies.

Muppets From Space: Film Club Review

17 May

This week in film club we enjoyed a true classic movie, Muppets from Space.

The film, is one of the later releases in the Muppets collection, and is as enjoyable as the rest of series. The movie was released in 1999 and was full of excitement and comedy values that the film buffs really enjoyed.

IMDB Movie plot;

“After Gonzo receives messages from his breakfast cereal, he determines that he is an alien and tries to contact his alien brethren, but is captured by an overzealous secret government agency determined to prove the existence of extraterrestrial life. It’s up to Kermit and the gang to rescue Gonzo and help reunite him with his long-lost family”

Ms Holmes is on a role recently with her film choices as Muppets in Space was well received once more.

Zahirah really enjoyed the movie, stating ‘that it was really funny’, and now will ‘let friends know about it’.

Deen called the movie ‘very funny, and really enjoyed Miss Piggy’s role’ in the classic.

Shaumik said “When I watched the film I felt happy because it was not sad at all and it had a happy end to it and I like happy endings.”

This film was slightly different to other Muppets movies, as Kermit and Miss Piggy took more of a back seat, and let the two of the funnier characters, Gonzo and Rizzo the rat take the lead and it worked really well. Both characters are very funny anyway, so this film was made for people who love the Muppets, but also love comedy.

Some memorable quotes from the film;

  • Rizzo: What? I cannot believe that little shrimp left us behind!
Pepe: I am not a shrimp. I am a king prawn!
  • Gonzo: Rizzo?
Rizzo: No, it’s Santa, but I forgot my reindeer.
  • Pepe: Hey, Kermit. When will you fix the oven, okay?
Kermit: What’s wrong with the oven?
    [oven explodes]
    Pepe: That.
  • Agent Barker: Black belt, third degree.
Miss Piggy: Platinum belt, with an unlimited line of credit.
  • Dr. Van Neuter: Hello, I’m Dr. Van Neuter. I’ll be your brain surgeon today, if you don’t mind. Ha! Get it? “Brain surgeon.” “Mind.” Hahaha!

These are just a handful of quotes that make this film really enjoyable, all of the fantastic quotes from this film can be seen at: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0158811/quotes

The rating was again a high one from the Film Club, as they gave it a big thumbs up and a brilliant 4 out of 5 on the ratings board.

Cars 2: Movie Review

14 May

This week the Film Club got together and enjoyed the Disney Pixar Animation Cars 2. The film, is the sequel to ‘Cars’ which was a hit in 2006.

Unfortunately, due to lots of school work, and SATs revision the film buffs were unable to review this piece, but I will do my best to sum it up for you.

The film boasts some huge Hollywood stars, including Eddie Izzard, Michael Caine and Owen Wilson, to name only three.

IMDB gave the film 6.4 out of 10, but the children of film club really enjoyed the tale of the race car drivers. From the reaction of the students, I would say that they enjoyed this film as much as they enjoyed previous movies, Lemony Snickett and the old classic, The Jungle Book.

The film itself is a real rollercoaster of a movie, with one of the lead characters, Mater going on an adventure of his own, leaving the world of the Grand Prix racing behind for this trip.

IMDB plot;

“After Mater gets his best friend, star race car Lightning McQueen, a spot in the very first World Grand Prix, he is given the job of pit crew chief. But while they are in Japan, Mater crosses paths with Holly Shiftwell, a spy searching for an American spy. Unknown to Mater, the American spy attached a tracking device on him while being attacked. Thinking the tow truck is the spy, Holly and another spy, Finn McMissile, take Mater around the world to find and stop an evil plot created by “lemons,” old cars considered ugly.”

The children seemed to really enjoy the movie, getting restless at times, because the story line isn’t the best, but all in all they seemed to enjoy the characters, with the story of the spy, and the good and bad car routine it really was a fun movie to watch.

We are off on Thursday due to the local elections being held, and Canterbury Cross Primary School is used as a polling station, so although your child isn’t in school, the school is still open for voting. Local elections take place every year and they determine which parliamentary party run your area, so it is a great opportunity for you to come in and vote on who you would like to see dealing with all the problems in your area.

If you do not live local, it will say on your voting card where your polling station is, so go along, because your vote matters.

It is then teachers training day on Friday, where teachers will have the day to make sure that your children are being taught to their best standards, and it also gives the teachers the opportunity to assess their own teaching skills with the other members of staff. It is also a chance to view the pupils’ progress and make sure that everybody is ready for the busy part of the year. It is used mainly for in house training, so working with colleagues to progress teaching methods.

Monday’s day off is for a public bank holiday. It is the first Monday of May, also known as May Day. May Day has been a traditional day of festivities throughout the centuries. May Day is most associated with towns and villages celebrating springtime fertility and revelry with village fetes and community gatherings, and was traditionally the only one to affect the state school calendar.

There are always things to do on May Day, with parties and festivals been held all over the place, so if you are going to celebrate these prestigious festivities enjoy them thoroughly and we will see you all back in school next Tuesday, which is the 8th May.
